Artist's Comments

Well this is my New Dragon, and hes finished!
Hes name is Balthazar, and i could go into the details about his story, life and position in the world but it would bore you. Suffice to say, this is actually a younger than intended version of him.
Sorry about the large file

just like most sculptures, he has an armature, but all my armatures as well as the usual wire and al foil include other things, in this case, his back legs are actually 3 short pencils in each joined with plastercine, and his front legs were matches. there is also quite a lot of paper in this, and his head is a lighter paper clay so as not to make him too heavy. and the reason the base is so huge is because i had to put a piece of metal chain in it to balance him out because body+wings=fall over :p

Awww, he's a cutie! I love the eyes and the rather irritated expression. His proportions look pretty good, though his neck seems quite thin for the bulk of his head and horns, but that could be a style thing as well.

Wings are a bugger, but I think you did them well. I'd consider attempting to add the wing membrane folds, though. It's harder and can be quite a trial, but if your patient, the outcome is usually worth it. :)

yeah, i made the neck waaay too thin and long, i probably shouldve added more to it, but the clay had already dried and trying to get wet onto dry is like trying to get a red horse to be blue :?
wing folds are a bitch :P
thanks for the tips

Cool, worthy of a Blind Guardian album cover.

The time of purging is upon us, when the Cat-Haters shall be burned from this world, and their ashes shall grit the Path to glorious salvation.

May the Holy Cat guide you along your true path.

Depend on the rabbits foot if you will, but remember, it didn't work for the rabbit.

I have to ask... how did you do those wings? I have quite more than a hard time doing dragon wings!
:iconangstmonkey:
i keep experimenting with my wings, but with this dragon i made an armature out of a coat hanger and very thin wire for the wing bones, then placed a sheet of modroc (which is like a loosly woven fabric with pieces of plaster stuck to it) over the armature, secured it with clay slop then covered it all with thin rolled sheets of clay. It took about two days to make each wing, because i was constantly smoothing bits, or raising bits (like the ridges in the wings) and preventing cracking as the clay dried.
overall i'm fairly happy with them, they are meant to look like hes folded them but it didnt quite work.

I hope this all made sense!
this might not work with sculpey tho, i used Jovi air dry clay, which is pretty cheap and crappy but i dont have the money for sculpey.

if you have any more questions, please ask!
